Located between the center of the city; Taksim and Fındıklı districts, Cihangir besides its historical past, is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city. District also houses many foreigners and artists.
District is formed by; Cihangir, Kılıç Ali Paşa and Purtelas neighborhoods. The main streets of the district are; Akarsu and Cihangir.
Cihangir takes its name from the son of Suleiman the Magnificent and Sultan Hurrem’s son Cihangir. After his son’s death Suleiman orders Architect Sinan to build a mosque to this district. But in this time there were no settling in the district.
During 19th century district witnessed many fires and in 1916 after the big and devastating fire the wooden buildings destroyed and the wooden architectural era has ended for the district.
During 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s district known as hot spot for nightlife and as important dentists and doctors were living the district was an important health center.
During 1960’s the change of Taksim and its area Cihangir becomes ratty and neglected. During the reformation in Taksim in 1980’s Cihangir’s countenance gets better.
Today, the district is a cultural place where many writers, painters and movie artists lives.
