Sultanahmet SquareOld City
The square right in the middle of all major attractions is the Sultanahmet Square. This area served as a hippodrome during the Byzantian times and it hosted many rough and bloody chariot races. Back then, the square was surrounded with public buildings and monuments.
During the Ottoman times this square came to be known as the square of Horse. Scattered around the square, there are several Roman, Byzantian and Ottoman monuments that survived throughout the ages.
This square has always been as vibrant as today through the history, because all major public events were organized here. Whether it were palace celebrations, public demonstrations or sports events, people have always gathered here. You can find many torist information kiosks, souvenir shops and cafes here.
