Maiden's Tower

Romantic

There are many legends about the Maiden's Tower. One of them is; a king learns from one of his oracles that his daughter will be killed by a snake bite by her 18th birthday. To protect his daughter, the king builds this tower on the water, away from any snakes and he imprisons his daughter here. However the prophecy still manifests, as a snake enters the tower inside one of the birthday presents that the girl receives on her 18th birthday.

Maiden's Tower is also known as Leander's Tower, according to another legend; the ancient Greek myth of Hero and Leander. Hero was a priestess living in a tower at Sestos, at the edge of the Dardanelles. Leander, a young man from Abydos on the other side of the strait, fell in love with her and would swim every night across the Dardanelles to be with her. Hero would light a lamp every night at the top of her tower to guide his way.

But one stormy winter night, the waves tossed Leander in the sea and the breezes blew out Hero's light, and Leander lost his way and was drowned. Hero threw herself from the tower in grief and died as well.

Today, you can reach the tower by boat and have a romantic dinner with a 360 view of Istanbul.
