Situated in Beyoglu district, Karakoy houses many popular hotels and restaurants.

District is one of the oldest centers of trade. In the last quarter of the 19th century, Karakoy became financial district of finance. Today Karakoy is one of the important center for trade and transportation and it’s close to many touristic districts such as; Galata, Sishane and Tophane.

Karakoy is used as a harbor since Byzantine Empire. In A.C 1000, Byzantine Emperor provided Genoese merchants to deal trade in the area. Therefore district has Italian architecture influence.

In 1453 with the conquest of Istanbul, district devided into 3 settling categories; Genoese, Venetian and Catalan merchants, Geneose and Ottoman citizens together with Greek, Armenian, Georgian and Jews.

In 1500 Jews running from inquisition settled in the area. After that Karakoy undergo raid of Europeans came to fight for Crimean War.

District became an important center of banking after the Ottoman Central Bank and then with the Italian and Austrian assurance company openings.

With the increase of trade affairs in 20th century, harbor customs buildings, passenger terminals and sea storehouses widened. In 1917, white Russians running from October Revolution settled in district.

Today Karakoy is important for international and local transportation. Galata Bridge in the district connects Karakoy and Historical Peninsula. Tram runs between Kabatas and Zeytinburnu. Funicular provides access to Istiklal Street.

Karakoy Harbor; the only floating jetty of Istanbul, provides access to Haydarpasa Trainf Station and Kadıkoy.

From Karakoy Harbor, ferries carry to Black Sea Shores such as; Odessa, Yalta, Sivastopol, Kırım, Kezlev, Herson, Novorossisk and Köstence.
Luxurious cruise ships cruises to Mediternean shores, Athens, Dubrovnik, Civitavecchia and Venice.

There are many important cultural and historical monuments and buildings; such as Galata Tower and Camondo Stairs from European cultures. Karakoy also houses many minority schools.
