Although most risks could be averted using commonsense, common health issues for a visitor in Istanbul could be food poisoning and travel diarrhea. In order to avoid these, visitors are advised not to consume unrefrigerated meat and dairy, avoid dubious looking street food and fish, and be especially careful on hot summer days. A very important point is to only drink bottled water – drinking tap water should be avoided. Expect to pay for water in most restaurants (small bottles, around 2 TL).

One of Istanbul’s unique features is its stray cats and dogs. While they are generally harmless, be careful getting in contact.

International traveler’s insurance coverage would come in handy in events that require hospital treatment. You can consult pharmacies for minor issues, but be sure to get a physician’s advice on more serious issues. Public hospitals can mean long queues and language barriers, while private hospitals are generally expensive.

You can try the public Taksim Hastanesi (Emergency Hospital; 212 252 4300), or the private Koc University Hospital (0850 250 8 250)  and  American Hospital (444 3 777)  in the same area.
